Classical Pilates is the only form of Pilates that remains true to the original exercises and philosophy as founded by Joseph Pilates nearly a century ago. Elements of the disciplines he practised such as boxing, gymnastics, martial arts, yoga, skiing, self-defence, dance, weightlifting, circus training can be found in his work. He studied, trained and selected the most effective aspects from each to develop the Pilates Method called Contrology.
Classical Pilates offers strength and stretch within each movement. The entire workout is based on the powerhouse (the centre of your body) controlling and commanding your limbs. As you develop, you are continually challenged with new exercises, apparatus and experiences.
The classical sequence appropriately warms up the body, challenges and cools it down. It also strengthens and stretches the torso, arms and legs in all planes of movement, challenging clients with and then against gravity: lying down, sitting up, kneeling, standing.
Classical Pilates is the backbone of all ArrowPilates’ sessions.
The benefits of classical Pilates are undeniable. First of all, it’s really great for your body. Pilates helps strengthen all of your muscles, so that you are better able to perform your movements and actions throughout the day and avoid injury.
Pilates can improve your range of motion, help you tone your core, improve your posture, increase your muscular endurance and control your breathing. This is because the various positions and apparatus’ you use are all designed to resist your movements in just the right way so those inner muscles really have to work against it. That way you can concentrate on movement. You must always do it slowly and smoothly. Then your whole body is in it,” explains Joseph Pilates.
